Mt Eden Swimmer Making Waves

Mt Eden Swimming’s own Alex Dunkley (14) is our latest National Champion and is set to represent New Zealand in international waters. Alex recently competed in the 2020 Epic Swim and New Zealand Open Water Championships on Lake Taupo in both the 2.5km and 5km races, placing first in his age groups in both events. His performance, particularly in the 5km event, caught the eye of Swimming New Zealand – Alex had  swum a time that had part qualified him for the World Junior Open Water Championships. To complete his qualification he would need to finish in the top 5 at the Australian Open Water Championships.

Two weeks later, he was off to Adelaide, to do just that. Up against approximately 50 of Australia’s best in the under 15 years old 5km event, Alex swam an outstanding race. Placed around 12th at the half way mark, Alex worked his way back to thrash out a sprint finish with the leaders in the last 500m, finishing 3rd – a mere 3 seconds behind the winner. Job done!

With qualification under his wetsuit, Alex now waits to see if he has done enough for formal selection by Swimming New Zealand to swim for New Zealand. The 2020 FINA World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships are scheduled for August 2020 in the Seychelles. An amazing journey, and we all hope it’s only the start. Congratulations Alex!
