Morry Doidge

On Anzac day (25th April 2020) Morry Doidge, the first ever professional coach of Mt Eden Swimming Club, passed away. Morry started coaching at the pool in 1954 as a 21 year old, one of only a handful of professional coaches in New Zealand at the time. The pool in those days was an open air 33 1/3 metre pool with a high diving platform and deep end. He was one of the driving forces in having a roof put on the pool, Mt Eden becoming one over very few covered facilities in New Zealand in that era.

Until he finished at the club in 1971 he produced athletes from his squad to national and international success. His charges included Olympic and Commonwealth Games representatives and medalists, Australian title-holders and countless national and provincial champions. But perhaps Morry’s greatest coaching accolade came in 1966 when he became the first New Zealand swim coach appointed to a major national team. At the Kingston Commonwealth Games, he guided a team of nine, including five members of the Mt Eden Club. That team, one of New Zealand's most successful, returned with a tally of one gold, two silver and three bronze medals. One of the Mt Eden athletes that was part of that team was Dave Gerrard, who won the gold in the 220 yards butterfly and bronze in the 4 x 110 yard medley relay team. Dave Gerrard is the current President of Swimming New Zealand. Our very own Don McKenna was part of Morry's stable of very well performed athletes.

But Morry’s coaching legacy was not solely with elite competitors. Throughout his professional career, he remained a dedicated swim teacher to countless numbers of youngsters.

Morry's memory lives in the memories of the many lives that he touched as a coach, a mentor and a friend.
